Anthology of American Folk Music – Harry Smith

October 10, 2007

I saw an amazing thing on Ovation last night on Harry Smith. He was quite a guy – many credit him with the folk music revival that many erroneously think was the first wave of folk – people like Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs……Harry Smith was an artist and a filmmaker and of course a collector and compiler of American folk music – there is a new box set out of a bunch of modern new music types paying homage to the original Anthology – I have seen it at Borders and it was nice to get a sense of it by seeing and hearing what the musicians contributed. Anyway, Allen Ginsberg took Harry Smith in during Smith’s final years and Smith made a comeback and did even more amazing things and won a lifetime achievement award at the Grammys while he lived with Ginsberg – for about 4 years. The thing that I found the most fascinating was that the whole time that Allen Ginsberg was talking about Harry Smith he was crying….and I think of Ginsberg as having gone through a lot and being pretty world wise and such…..but he was just openly weeping about Harry….it was touching as hell!

Blog stats

October 10, 2007

I believe that it is noteworthy that with all of the diverse opinions and conversations that we, as brothers in law, have on this blog – all of the issues and problems of the world that we take on full speed ahead – that all of our hits from other people come from our one topic devoted to the Michigan Tax Increase! Follow the money eh!!!!!!

We may easily agree that our religion supercedes our national heritage – but when it comes to money…….we can sure raise an audience!!!!

National Flag in Church

October 8, 2007

I certainly do not expect anyone to change anything based upon my humble opinion, but I do not believe it appropriate to have the flag of a nation permanently displayed in a church.

On some occasions, I can see it being used (such as draped over a casket during a funeral or in a procession of veterans or boyscouts, etc.), but it should not be standing or hanging or otherwise on display on a regular basis.

To me, the church is above and beyond nationality. At least it should be.

Ernesto “Che” Guevara

October 8, 2007

Ernesto “Che” Guevara was killed 40 years ago today.

Isn’t it ironic that probably millions of dollars have been made from selling his image on T-shirts, mugs, etc. within the capitalistic system he fought against?

My Dr. Pepper Has More!

October 4, 2007

I recently noticed my 20 oz. Dr. Pepper is now 21 oz.

Wow! 5% more for free!

That means I get 5% more water, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, phosphoric acid, natural and artificial flavors, sodium benzoate and caffine!

Wait! Is this a good thing?

Trying to Squeez Ron Paul Out

October 3, 2007

According to Gambling911.com, the betting odds of Ron Paul becoming President are 6 to 1, making him a bigger favorite than Mitt Romney. However, those odds may soon diminish because the Republican Party, in various states, is (quietly) closing the primaries to allow only registered Republicans to vote. This means many Independents, Libertarians and Democrats who support Ron Paul will not be able to vote.

Some states, including Michigan, are aiming to move their primaries to earlier dates which may result in other states doing the same. The end result will mean even fewer people voting in the primaries for Ron Paul because the momentum he has obtained and continues to gain will not be what it could have been if the primaries were held later.

And so far as I know, Ron Paul is the only candidate who will end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan ASAP.

October 3, 2007

I have, in the last couple of days, started checking out Podcasts…..there is a major amount of not so amazing stuff out there on Podcasts as you would figure in a format that anyone can do sitting at home…..but upon closer look – what a BUNCH of cool stuff hidden amongst the rubble…..right now on my MP3 player I have 2 seperate hour long Reggae podcasts, an Alternative Country/Cowpunk podcast, a podcast where a guy talks about boxing, one where a guy reads the most difficult Crossword words (he says the clue and then spells the anwers, a 20 minute long Popeye Cartoon from 1936 and a fan produced program about Weird Al and that was all from the FIRST 2 days that I looked!

I told you all that to say this – I KNEW that podcasts existed and have never checked them out before – how much amazingly cool stuff is out there right on the internet for no extra charge – I bet there is a LOT
